How we score aircon contractors in Penang
Penang Aircon Guide currently scores 119 air conditioning contractor businesses across Northern Malaysia, from small servicing outfits to larger installation companies. This page explains exactly how that score is built, what each signal means for you as someone hiring an aircon contractor, and where the method runs into honest limits.
The five signals, heaviest first
Every business gets a composite score out of 100, built from five measured signals. Here they are, in order of how much weight they carry.
| Signal | Weight | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Sentiment | 28% | What recent reviews actually say: praise vs recurring complaints |
| Rating | 26% | Google's aggregate star rating |
| Volume | 20% | Number of reviews, log-scaled |
| Recency | 12% | How recently customers left reviews |
| Completeness | 14% | Whether phone, website, hours and address are all listed |
Why sentiment carries the most weight
A star average tells you almost nothing about what a company is actually like to hire. Two aircon contractors can both sit at 4.3 stars, and yet one of them has a string of recent reviews mentioning the same technician showing up late, or a chemical wash quoted at one price and billed at another. The stars won't show you that. Reading what customers actually wrote will. That is why we weight sentiment above the raw rating itself: it is a synthesis of recurring themes in recent reviews, both good and bad, and it is the closest thing to catching a pattern before you become part of it.
Why the other signals matter
Rating still matters because it is the broadest, most recognisable signal of customer satisfaction, so it carries the second-heaviest weight. Volume matters because five glowing reviews and five hundred are not the same kind of evidence, so we log-scale review counts rather than treating a handful of reviews as equal to hundreds. Recency matters because an aircon company that was excellent in 2019 may have changed hands, changed staff, or changed standards since, so recent feedback is weighted more heavily than old feedback. Completeness matters last but still counts: a contractor who lists a working phone number, a real address, accurate hours and a website is easier to verify and easier to reach when something goes wrong with your installation or your warranty.
Where this method has limits
We say this plainly: a business with only a few recent reviews cannot produce a reliable score, no matter how good those reviews are. When that happens, we label the listing as low-confidence rather than pretend the number means more than it does. We also do not republish reviews wholesale. What you read on a listing page is our synthesis of themes across recent reviews, and we link out to Google so you can read the original source yourself and judge for your own.
Scores are earned, not sold
Every score on this site comes from the rubric above and nothing else. Where paid placement exists on this directory, it is always labelled clearly as such, and it never changes a business's score. If any list on this site involved editorial judgment in choosing or ordering picks, such as our aircon installation shortlist, that involvement is disclosed on the page itself. Nothing here is quietly sponsored.
Who is behind this
Penang Aircon Guide is published by Meridian Guides, which puts out independent city directories for everyday services across Malaysia. The scoring method on this site is built entirely on public customer reviews, rankings are never sold, and sponsored placements are always kept visually and editorially separate from earned positions. Janice, Editor, maintains the rankings on this guide and oversees how listings are checked and scored.
How current is the data
Data behind these scores is refreshed on a monthly cycle. Individual listings carry a "last verified" stamp so you can see when a given business was last checked, rather than trusting a single snapshot to stay accurate forever. You can browse the full directory from the home page at any time.
FAQ
- How is the aircon contractor score calculated?
- It's a weighted composite of five signals: sentiment (28%), rating (26%), volume (20%), recency (12%) and completeness (14%). Sentiment and rating come from Google reviews, volume is log-scaled so a handful of reviews doesn't outweigh hundreds, recency tracks how current the feedback is, and completeness checks whether phone, website, hours and address are all listed.
- Why does sentiment matter more than the star rating?
- Because two businesses can share the same star average while one has recent reviews repeating the same complaint, like late technicians or billing surprises. The star average hides that pattern. Reading what reviews actually say, which is what our sentiment signal does, is the only way to catch it.
- Can a business pay to improve its score?
- No. Scores are calculated only from the published rubric and never edited by hand. Where paid placement exists on this site, it is always labelled and it never changes a business's score. Any list where editors chose or ordered the picks discloses that on the page.
- How often is the data updated?
- The directory is refreshed on a monthly cycle, and each listing shows a last verified date so you can see when it was last checked rather than relying on an old snapshot.
